Hutchinson Island Golf Course - Sailfish Point

This Hutchinson Island Golf Club Brings Nicklaus’ Touch to the Ocean

Posted on: October 13, 2024 | Read Time: 4 minutes

PGA legend Jack Nicklaus has created some of the most distinct golf courses across the world. Yet, his signature design at Sailfish Point on Florida’s east coast stands out as a true rarity. Located within a private club community at the southernmost tip of Hutchinson Island, Nicklaus designed this par-72 course to be deeply connected to nature. Here, the soothing sound of ocean waves and daily encounters with wildlife create a unique atmosphere for Members. Let’s delve into the nature-centric design of this signature golf course that has withstood the test of time.

Hutchinson Island Golf Course

18 Holes of Private Championship Golf

Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, Indian River, and St. Lucie Inlet, the course offers stunning water views from every hole. The Nicklaus Design team crafted the layout to complement the landscape, using vibrant greens that contrast beautifully with the blues of the horizon. Players navigate through palm trees, lush foliage, and undulating fairways, with each hole revealing increasingly dramatic water views. The eighteenth hole, named “Window to the Sea” for its ocean view, invites golfers to pause and appreciate the scenery before concluding their round.

No Tee Times Allows Members to Set the Pace

With five sets of tees, the course itself provides a flexible, relaxed layout for all skill levels. The forward tees, set at 4,986 yards, enhance playability for those with slower swing speeds. The back tees stretch to an impressive 7,081 yards, making the course ideal for competitive Member events and PGA sectional tournaments. Plus, with no tee times, Members have the freedom to play whenever they choose. Whether it’s an early morning round inspired by the ocean breeze or a spontaneous afternoon game with friends, this flexibility cultivates a relaxed and intimate golfing experience.

A Shared Sanctuary for Wildlife

This Hutchinson Island golf course not only boasts a stunning design but also serves as a sanctuary for local wildlife. As a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary,” the community takes pride in preserving the natural beauty that surrounds the course. The inland environment is home to a variety of bird species, including egrets, herons, ibises, and wood storks. Additionally, the Environmental Stewardship Committee, formed by a group of Members, collaborates with the golf team to enhance preservation efforts. They have established five butterfly gardens and an apiary program featuring beehives along the course, creating vital habitats for pollinators. The harvested honey is also available for purchase by Members at the Golf Pro Shop.
