In recent years, Florida golf courses have undergone a significant transformation. No longer is it solely about challenges that only professionals can conquer. Rather, there’s been a notable shift towards accommodating players of all skill levels, highlighting a commitment to inclusivity in the sport. This evolving philosophy inspired the redesign of the golf course at Sailfish Point, located on a barrier island along Florida’s east coast. The 2021 renovation of this Jack Nicklaus-designed course introduced new tees and features that strike a captivating balance between challenge and enjoyment. Let’s take a closer look.
A Fully Reimagined Florida Golf Course
Managed by the Nicklaus Design Team, no blade of grass was left unturned during the renovations to the Sailfish Point golf course. A key change was the reduction of formal sand areas by 15%, allowing for a more fluid game while still showcasing the iconic high-flashed bunkers that define the course. To address the area’s windy conditions, advanced bunker liners were introduced for stability and consistency. An upgraded irrigation system nourishes the new TifEagle Bermuda grass, celebrated for its superior speed and consistency.
The renovations also introduced five sets of tees ranging from 4,986 yards at the forward tees to 7,081 yards at the back. Sailfish Point member and avid golfer David Lusk remarked, “Surprisingly, after the reconstruction, single-digit handicap players found the course even more challenging and enjoyed it. At the same time, higher-handicap players discovered it much more playable. Nicklaus left us with a wonderful asset here. The course is visually stunning, challenging to play, yet still very enjoyable for everyone.”
A Canvas of Greens and Blues
The redesign of this Florida golf course highlights the vibrant greens that beautifully contrast with the blue hues of the three surrounding bodies of water. Players weave through palm trees, lush foliage, and undulating fairways, with each hole unveiling increasingly dramatic water views. The 18th hole, aptly named “Window to the Sea” by Nicklaus, offers a breathtaking view of the ocean, providing a stunning finale to the round.
Member Michael Boyd agrees, “My favorite hole is definitely number 18. The approach shot to the green offers a view of the ocean, which is spectacular. It’s also a great finishing hole when there are bets on the line. It presents a challenge, and plenty can happen, whether good or bad.”
A Shared Sanctuary for Wildlife
These natural features have transformed the Sailfish Point golf course into a haven for local flora and fauna. As a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, the community proudly preserves and protects the nature that surrounds the course. The Environmental Stewardship Committee, comprised of dedicated members, collaborates with the golf team to enhance conservation efforts. They have established five butterfly gardens and an apiary program featuring beehives throughout the course, creating essential habitats for pollinators. Members can even purchase the harvested honey at the Golf Pro Shop.
Nancy Zappala and her husband remarked on the time they had to pause and admire the wildlife on the course. “We were on the third hole and had to start taking pictures because there were about 200 ibis and ducks diving into the water,” shared Zappala. “It was like being in the most incredible nature reserve you’ve ever seen.”
Golf Events Tailored to All Skill Levels
Expert golf professionals also create a calendar of golf events on the course to cater to all skill levels. Offerings range from foundational classes on proper grip techniques to competitive league tournaments that challenge experienced players. Members benefit from personalized instruction in the Practice Area, with full-time teaching pros available to tailor plans to individual gameplay. The lineup of activities includes mixed foursomes, pick-up games, scrambles, and formal Men’s and Women’s League play, with popular tournaments providing opportunities for competition and camaraderie on the course.
“The golf events are a fantastic way to meet people, and there’s no judgment,” shared Member Donna Boyd. “Our golf pro is always reminding us, ‘You’re doing this for fun. Don’t worry about it.’ We’ve certainly found it to be a really welcoming place.”
