Located at the southernmost tip of Hutchinson Island, Sailfish Point boasts an unparalleled natural setting at the convergence of the Atlantic Ocean, St. Lucie Inlet, and Indian River estuary. With a breathtaking setting to call home, Members of this private oceanfront community are devoted to preserving its natural way of life. See how Sailfish Point has embraced and celebrated its natural setting to entice both inhabitants and wildlife alike.
1. Golf in a Designated Audubon Sanctuary
Sailfish Point’s Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course boasts dramatic, jaw-dropping ocean and river views from every hole. With five sets of tees ranging from 5,001 to 7,081 yards, the nationally acclaimed par-72 course is not only beautiful in design but also a sanctuary for nearby wildlife. Director of Golf Course Operations Schott MacPhee has made great strides in environmental conservation on the course by reducing chemical use, stepping up water conservation efforts, and creating natural buffer zones between the golf course and the waterways. Thanks to MacPhee’s efforts, the course was designated as a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” by Audubon International and he received recognition for Environmental Stewardship.
2. A Zero Discharge Community
Sailfish Point has also installed an innovative, self-sufficient water system that ensures no stormwater or wastewater enters the ocean or rivers surrounding the community. An on-site water treatment plant provides water for both golf course irrigation and residential use. The golf course irrigation systems are equipped with a reverse osmosis treatment to lower salinity levels in the soil and promote healthier turf and landscapes. The treatment plant also provides water for Members to use in their homes, with levels that meet and exceed federal and state drinking water standards.
3. Environmental Stewardship Committee
Members at Sailfish Point have also banded together to take the lead in the community’s environmental initiatives. The Environmental Stewardship Committee has worked with Scott MacPhee and his team to establish five butterfly gardens around the golf course that not only add visual appeal but also serve as a crucial habitat for pollinators. Another noteworthy initiative of the committee is the apiary program of beehives nestled in secluded spots along the course. The groundskeepers diligently monitor the hives daily for activity, and the harvested honey is made available for purchase by Members at the Spa and Golf Pro Shop. These are just a few of the initiatives the Environmental Stewardship Committee has coordinated across Sailfish Point.
4. Inspiring Future Stewards of Nature
The Environmental Stewardship Committee is also active in hosting numerous events each year that promote environmental education and awareness in the community. From nature photo contests and scavenger hunts to guest activist speakers and field trips, events are designed for all ages and interests. Bird watching is another popular activity, and Members are taken on a water taxi to Bird Island to observe the nesting of wood storks, herons, and spoonbills. One of the most popular monthly events is the monthly beach cleanup walk, ensuring the pristine beauty of Sailfish Points 1.5 miles of shoreline remains a priority.
